My name is Helena Bergqvist, I’m 36 years old and I live in Lund, Sweden. I am interested in both the figurative and the non-figurative, which has led me to work with photography as well as digital abstract paintings.
My photography is about seeing and experiencing the world around me. With a camera in my hands, my senses are sharpened and I notice things that I normally wouldn’t have registered. I often find beauty in simple things. Like a pair of old and worn out shoes at a flea market, or how the winter morning light hits the wall of an old building. I like to collect these moments of beauty. In a way, my photographs are keepsakes.
I make two different kinds of paintings – bold abstracts and detailed patterns.
My abstract paintings consist of conversations between colours, shapes and layers. The first mark I make acts as a conversation starter, and every following brush stroke is a reaction to the previous one. I never know exactly what the end result will look like. Instead, I paint until I feel that everything has been said.
My detailed patterns are inspired by the thought of wild and untouched nature. I think of these paintings as ecosystems where everything is intertwined or connected. Painting these ecosystems is like laying the puzzle and creating the pieces at the same time. It is a way for me to disconnect from what I know and use my imagination to create something new.
